PHILOSOPHY
The cornerstone to any successful intervention is the therapeutic relationship. We foster learning by building relationships and self-efficacy, helping clients to understand the purview of their learning profile, and teaching explicit skills and tools to tackle learning barriers and new concepts. We treat each client with dignity and respect, using their strengths to overcome their challenges. Depending on the client, the therapist may focus on completing schoolwork during sessions or designing an individualized curriculum using games, vocational skills, client’s hobbies, and research-based learning activities. The approach is based on the pedagogical ideas of constructivism, Reggio Emilia, Conscious Discipline, SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva, and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. While each intervention is tailored to meet the needs of the individual client, the following tenets are universal in every therapeutic relationship.
♥︎ Everyone is capable and competent.
♥︎ Learning happens through play and with joy.
♥︎ Learning is constructed through one's own experience and can be inventive.
♥︎ Learning is a social activity that happens through collaborative problem solving.
♥︎ Celebrate individual successes.
With these tenets in mind, measurable and achievable goals are set to address learning challenges. Through exploration and play, new cognitive levels are unlocked as the client works toward individualized goals. Through educational therapy, clients both develop new skills to tackle academic and occupational challenges as well as develop a strong understanding of their learning profile.
